Almost every coffee program runs on two cup sizes: 12 oz for the standard drink and 16 oz for the large. The 16 oz cup and the 12 oz cup both sit on a Φ90 rim, which means one lid closes both of them. Adding the second size to your range costs a second cup SKU. It does not cost a second lid SKU.
That one fact changes how the order gets written, how the stockroom is counted, and what happens when one size runs short mid service.
Why a Coffee Program Runs 12 oz and 16 oz
Two sizes carry the drink menu. The 12 oz is the regular: cappuccino, flat white, standard filter, the cup most customers get when they do not name a size. The 16 oz is the large, the commuter cup, the one that carries a double shot with room for milk. Between them they cover most of what a counter pours in a day.
Everything else is an edge case for most operators. A small espresso cup serves a specific drink. A 20 or 24 oz serves a specific customer. The 12 and the 16 are the pair that actually turns over, which is why they are the pair worth speccing properly instead of ordering off a size chart.
The 12 oz is built to 360ml and the 16 oz to 500ml, so the two sit 140ml apart. That gap reads on the counter as one clear step up, which is what a two size menu needs. Sizes closer together than that tend to give the customer a decision without a difference.
Height is where the pair separates on the shelf. Both stand on the same Φ90 mouth, but the 12 oz is 110mm tall in every build, while the 16 oz is 135mm in single wall and ripple wall and 137mm in double wall. The step up is 25mm, or 27mm if you run double wall at the large size. Check that against dispenser tubes, under counter clearance and the pocket depth of your delivery bags before you commit, using the height of the cup you are actually buying rather than a figure from a chart.

Three things in that table are worth reading twice.
The rim never moves. Φ90 across all six lines, both sizes, all three builds. Volume comes from height, and the mouth of the cup stays exactly where it was.
The 12 oz measures H110 in every build here. Single wall, double wall and ripple wall all come in at the same height on file, so a 12 oz sleeve pocket or dispenser setting that suits one of these builds suits the other two.
The 16 oz double wall is 2mm taller than the other two 16 oz builds, H137 against H135. Capacity is unchanged: all three are built to 500ml. Those 2mm matter in exactly one place, which is a tight dispenser tube or a stacking height calculation run across a full case. Everywhere else they are noise.
One caveat on the heights above, and it matters more than it looks. These are the figures for this range. Paper cups are formed on tooling, and tooling is not identical between one supplier and the next, so the same 12 oz can come back a millimetre or two either side of 110mm depending on who converted it. The rim behaves differently: Φ90 is the interchange point the whole hot cup market is built around, which is why a lid bought from one source generally seats on a cup from another. Heights also shift a little between production batches on the same tooling. Treat the rim as portable and the height as a build spec rather than a caliper guarantee. If a sleeve, a dispenser tube or a car cup holder has to clear it, measure the sample rather than trusting any published height, including this one.
Two figures belong on the RFQ line: Φ90 for both sizes, and the height of the build you intend to run. Rim diameter decides which lid seats, height decides what the cup fits inside, and both surface after delivery rather than before it.
Read the per box column alongside the heights. Single wall packs 1,000 to a box at both sizes, while double wall and ripple wall pack 500. A program running single wall at 12 oz and an insulated build at 16 oz is ordering two different box quantities on one purchase order.
One Rim Across Both Sizes: What Φ90 Buys You
A lid seats on a rim. It does not know or care how tall the cup is or what the ounce label says. Both the 12 oz and the 16 oz sit on Φ90, so both take the same Φ90 lid, in every build.
The buying consequence is worth stating plainly. Going from a one size program to two means one more cup commitment: a second body, a second artwork setup if you print, a second line on the purchase order. It means no extra lid commitment at all. The lids already on your shelf close the new cup on day one.
That cuts both ways in the stockroom. Lids run short faster than anyone plans for, because customers take spares and staff double lid a cup that drips, and when 12 oz lids run dry mid service the 16 oz stock covers it that afternoon. One lid inventory to count, one line to reorder, one part number to reconcile.
Three builds, one mouth. The wall changes, the Φ90 rim does not, so one lid closes all three.
Φ90 reaches further than these two sizes. The 10, 20, 22 and 24 oz cups sit on the same rim, so the whole mid to large hot range is a single lid diameter. A cafe running 12 and 16 oz today can add a 20 oz next season and still be ordering one lid.

The 8 oz Exception: Where the Ounce Label Goes Wrong
If Φ90 covered everything, none of this would need saying. It does not. The 8 oz is the size that breaks the rule, and it breaks it quietly.
An 8 oz paper cup exists on both a Φ80 rim and a Φ90 rim. Two different cups, one ounce label, 10mm apart at the mouth. A Φ90 lid rests on top of a Φ80 cup instead of seating in it, and no amount of pressing closes a 10mm gap.
The failure pattern runs the same way each time. A buyer runs 12 and 16 oz on Φ90, adds an 8 oz espresso or kids size, orders it by the ounce figure alone and receives the Φ80 build.

The fix is one line in the RFQ. State the size and the rim diameter as a pair: “8 oz, Φ90” or “8 oz, Φ80”. A diameter in millimetres is unambiguous in a way an ounce label is not, and this range holds two different 8 oz cups to prove the point.
Run the same discipline on the two core sizes even though they are unambiguous today. “12 oz, Φ90” and “16 oz, Φ90” cost nothing to type and they survive a change of supplier, buyer or catalogue. Specs written by ounce label tend to go wrong at the reorder, once the person who placed the first order has moved on.

Which Wall Build to Run at 12 and 16 oz

The two sizes do not have to run the same build. A 12 oz is a smaller serve, drunk faster and more often sat down, so single wall with a coffee cup sleeve is a workable answer when the customer stays in the room. A 16 oz holds 500ml against 360ml and tends to be carried further and held longer, which is where an insulated build earns its cost difference.
Splitting the build across the two sizes is normally treated as a compromise. On the lid side it costs nothing at all, because single wall, double wall and ripple wall all finish at Φ90 at both sizes. A 12 oz single wall and a 16 oz ripple wall take the same lid off the same pallet, so the split shows up on the cup lines of the order and nowhere else.
What the split does cost is box count and shelf space, which is the section below. Before deciding, check the two things the build changes on the cup itself: the outer surface your print lands on, and the height on file, H110 at 12 oz in every build against H135 or H137 at 16 oz.

Case Cube: Why Switching Build Doubles Your Boxes
Here is the number that surprises buyers after they have already chosen a build. Single wall packs 1,000 cups per box. Double wall packs 500. Ripple wall packs 500.
Same cup count, twice the boxes. A 20,000 pc order of 16 oz single wall is 20 boxes. The same 20,000 pcs in double wall or in ripple wall is 40 boxes. The order quantity did not change and the storage requirement did.

Two 16 oz case dimensions are on file and they show what that doubling looks like on a pallet. Single wall ships in a 460 x 365 x 535mm case holding 1,000 cups. Double wall ships in 460 x 365 x 575mm holding 500. Same footprint, 40mm taller, half as many cups inside, which works out to a little over twice the case volume per cup.
Ask for the ripple wall case dimensions on the RFQ rather than assuming they match double wall. The per box figure is the same 500, but the carton size is confirmed per order, and it is the input your pallet plan actually needs.
Run that through a stockroom and the consequences are concrete. Twice as many boxes to receive, count, shelve and rotate, and twice as many to move when a delivery lands during service. If your back of house is a cupboard rather than a warehouse, the build decision is a storage decision wearing a comfort decision’s clothes.
It reaches the freight conversation too. Twice the boxes for the same cup count is twice the space on the pallet and in the container, so confirm the cube with your forwarder before you switch build. Lids, Coatings and How to Spec the Order
One rim, several lid materials. All of them fit the same Φ90 mouth, so the choice comes down to temperature, cost and the recycling or composting story you want to tell.

CPLA and clear PLA are two different materials and the names do not help. CPLA holds hot drinks to 100°C and is the compostable hot lid. Clear PLA is cold and warm only, to 60°C, and it belongs on an iced drink.
Coating on the cup follows the same logic. PE is the hot default and handles hot drinks to 95°C. PLA lining is cold and warm only, rated to 45°C and softening above 55°C, so it never goes under hot coffee and carries no microwave claim.
Aqueous is the no plastic film option. It is microwaveable because there is no plastic film to soften or delaminate, and it runs about 15% over a like for like PE cup. Trade offs in full: PE vs PLA vs aqueous coating.
Two green claims to get right before artwork. BPI certified commercial compostable is available per SKU and covers US commercial composting. On PFAS, the accurate wording is that items are screened against a 106-substance PFAS panel by independent labs, which is a test report and not a certification.
The ordering realities, stated flat. MOQ is 20,000 pcs per size on standard items, 30,000 pcs per size on aqueous and 50,000 pcs per size on custom sizes. Lids run at 10,000 pcs per size. Because cup MOQ is per size, a 12 oz and a 16 oz are two separate commitments of 20,000 each, while the Φ90 lid that closes both is one commitment of 10,000.
