What it is

Plain-language explanation

PLA (polylactic acid) is a bioplastic made from renewable plant sugars such as corn starch. It replaces the conventional petroleum-based PE film on the inside of the cup wall. The result is a cup that performs like a standard hot-drink cup — holding beverages up to 95 °C — but is designed to break down in industrial composting facilities rather than persist as plastic waste. PLA is not the same as home-compostable; it needs the controlled heat of an industrial composter (58 °C+). That distinction matters for compliance claims and buyer due diligence.

Key Benefits

Why buyers choose ECO / PLA Coated Paper Cups

🌽

Plant-based, not petroleum

PLA is derived from renewable corn starch, not fossil fuels. This reduces the fossil-carbon footprint of the cup and supports sustainability positioning for brands in EU and composting-program markets.

♻️

Industrially compostable in ~12 weeks

Under EN 13432 (EU) and ASTM D6400 (USA) conditions — 58 °C+ in a certified industrial composting facility. The cup breaks down into CO₂, water, and biomass within the composting cycle.

🌡️

Same hot-drink performance as PE

PLA coating handles beverages up to 95 °C — identical to standard PE. No compromise on leak resistance or structural integrity for hot coffee, tea, or soup.

📋

Supports EU sustainability compliance

Meets EN 13432 and ASTM D6400 standards. Suitable for buyers needing compostable packaging documentation for EU market access, event licensing, or sustainability reporting.

PFAS-free by composition

PLA film contains no per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. All CupsPak coatings meet food-contact safety requirements under FDA 21 CFR and EU EC 1935/2004.
