The short answer: single wall for cold drinks and cost control, double wall for hot drinks without a sleeve, ripple wall for maximum heat protection and shelf presence. The rest is detail โ€” here is how to choose with confidence.

If you're sourcing hot beverage cups for a coffee shop, hotel, or food service operation, you'll quickly encounter three construction types: single wall, double wall, and ripple wall. Each has a different insulation performance, cost profile, and environmental footprint.

This guide explains the differences clearly so you can make the right choice for your operation.

Single Wall Paper Cups

Single wall cups are made from a single layer of paperboard with an inner coating (PE, PLA, or aqueous). They are the most basic and most widely produced hot cup construction.

Insulation

Minimal. The single layer of paperboard provides very little thermal protection. Hot beverages (above 70ยฐC) will make the cup uncomfortable to hold without a sleeve or carrier. Most single wall cups are served with a corrugated paper sleeve or a cardboard carrier.

Cost

Lowest of the three constructions. Single wall cups use the least material and are the simplest to manufacture. They are the default choice for high-volume, cost-sensitive operations.

Sustainability

Single wall cups use the least paperboard per cup. With aqueous or PLA coating, they can be recyclable or compostable. The environmental footprint per cup is lower than double or ripple wall.

Best for

High-volume quick-service restaurants, vending machines, office coffee stations, and any operation where cups are served with sleeves or in carriers. Also suitable for warm (not hot) beverages.

Double Wall Paper Cups

Double wall cups have two layers of paperboard with an air gap between them. The inner layer holds the beverage; the outer layer provides insulation and a comfortable grip.

Insulation

Significantly better than single wall. The air gap between the two layers acts as a thermal barrier, keeping the beverage hotter for longer and keeping the outer surface comfortable to hold without a sleeve. Most double wall cups can be held comfortably with hot beverages up to 85ยฐC.

Cost

Approximately 30โ€“50% more expensive than single wall cups of the same capacity, due to the additional paperboard layer and more complex manufacturing process.

Sustainability

Double wall cups use more paperboard per cup than single wall. However, they eliminate the need for a separate sleeve, which offsets some of the additional material use. Net environmental impact depends on whether the sleeve would otherwise be used.

Best for

Specialty coffee shops where sleeve-free service is a brand standard. Premium hotel and airline catering. Any operation where the cup is the primary touchpoint for brand presentation and a sleeve would detract from the design.

Ripple Wall Paper Cups

Ripple wall cups (also called corrugated wall cups) have a single inner layer and an outer layer with a distinctive ridged or wave pattern. The ridges create air pockets that provide insulation similar to double wall, but with a different aesthetic.

Insulation

Comparable to double wall. The ridged outer layer provides good thermal insulation and a comfortable grip. Some operators find ripple wall cups easier to grip than smooth double wall cups, particularly with wet hands.

Cost

Typically slightly less expensive than double wall, but more expensive than single wall. The ripple construction uses less paperboard than double wall while achieving similar insulation.

Sustainability

Similar to double wall โ€” more material than single wall, but eliminates the need for a sleeve. The ripple pattern is achieved through a corrugated outer layer, which uses slightly less material than a full second wall.

Best for

Coffee shops and bakeries where a distinctive, tactile cup aesthetic is valued. Craft coffee brands. Operations where the cup is a brand differentiator and the ripple texture reinforces an artisan or premium positioning.

Making the Decision

The right construction depends on three factors:

  1. Temperature of beverages โ€” If you serve drinks above 70ยฐC and want sleeve-free service, choose double or ripple wall.
  2. Brand positioning โ€” Premium and specialty brands typically choose double or ripple wall. High-volume QSR operations typically choose single wall with sleeves.
  3. Budget โ€” If cost per cup is the primary driver, single wall is the clear choice. If brand experience is the priority, the premium for double or ripple wall is usually justified.

When in doubt, request samples of all three constructions and test them with your actual beverages. The difference in hand-feel and insulation performance is immediately apparent.
