Stock disposable paper bowls come in three builds, 13 sizes and five rim diameters. The ounce label names the portion your menu sells. The rim diameter in millimeters decides which lid closes it, and those two numbers do not move together.
Here is the proof out of our own spec sheet. A 16 oz round bowl takes a Φ150 lid, and a 16 oz ripple bowl takes a Φ115 lid. Same ounce label, 35mm apart at the mouth, and no lid will ever cross between them.
Run it the other way and the ripple 24 oz and the round 750ml (24 oz) are the identical body: Φ150 x 128 x H60 on both spec lines, two different products on the price list. Buyers who order by ounces alone find this out when the pallet lands. Buyers who order by rim diameter do not.
The Three Paper Bowl Builds and Who Each One Is For
Pick the build before you pick the size. Disposable paper bowls come in three builds, and the build sets the lid menu long before the size does, which is where orders go wrong.
Round paper bowls. The wide-mouth, flat-rim build, 500ml to 1300ml. It carries the widest lid menu in the range: PET, rPET, PP and paper, in Φ150 and Φ184. It takes hot and cold, so it covers soup, ramen, poke, grain bowls and salads out of one body shape.
When not to choose it: when the customer holds the bowl through the meal. A single-wall round bowl of hot broth gets uncomfortable in the hand fast, and no coating fixes that.
Takeout paper bowls. Taller and deeper, 700ml to 1500ml, built for hot volume takeout: ramen, pho, congee and hearty soups. The deeper wall holds heat longer and gives liquid further to travel before it reaches the rim, which matters inside a courier bag. Lids are PP and paper, and this series carries no verified US trade labels, so we quote it in ml and only in ml.
When not to choose it: the 1300ml and 1500ml sit on a Φ200 rim, outside the two takeout lid diameters listed, Φ150 and Φ185. Quote those two sizes with the lid confirmed at order, or specify the 1050ml on Φ185 if you want a lid you can reorder off the standard list.
Ripple paper bowls. A corrugated paper layer wrapped around the outside, in 16 oz, 20 oz and 24 oz. The ripple insulates the hand and reads as a hot noodle product on sight, which is why ramen bars, noodle counters and carried catering service default to it.
When not to choose it: ripple is listed with paper lids only, Φ115 and Φ150. No transparent lid means no visible contents, so it is the wrong build for a chilled display case where the customer buys with their eyes. Browse all three builds in the paper bowl range.

Four things in those tables are worth a minute each.
Volume comes from height, not width, inside a rim family. The ripple 16 oz and 20 oz share a Φ115 rim and differ by 28mm of height, 75mm against 103mm. The round 750ml and 1000ml share Φ150 and differ by 18mm. Same footprint on a shelf, different portion on the menu.
Diameter does not climb with volume. The round 900ml sits on a rim 34mm wider than the 1000ml and holds less. That is a merchandising build, wide and shallow so the toppings show from above, not a capacity build.
The 24 oz exists twice, identically. Round 750ml and ripple 24 oz are both Φ150 x 128 x H60, one paper body with a corrugated sleeve wrapped around one of them. Two SKUs, one geometry.
Base diameter is the stability number nobody asks for. The takeout 700ml stands 80mm tall on a 74mm base, a steep taper off a Φ150 mouth, while the takeout 1500ml stands 91mm on a 105mm base. Deep tapered builds carry more tipping risk in a delivery bag, so check base Φ before you send anything liquid through third-party delivery.

Which Lid Fits: Five Rim Diameters Across 13 Sizes
A lid seats on a rim, so any bowl sharing a rim diameter shares a lid geometry regardless of height, volume or what the ounce label says. Five diameters cover every disposable paper bowl in the range.

Φ150 is the row that pays. Five sizes across all three builds sit on it, so a lineup built inside that family is five bowl commitments but one lid diameter on the reorder sheet. A lid shortage on the 750ml gets covered out of 1000ml lid stock the same afternoon instead of by an airfreight invoice.
Now the trap in that same table. Φ184 and Φ185 are one millimeter apart and they are not interchangeable, because Φ184 belongs to the round series and Φ185 to the takeout series.
A buyer running both builds will at some point put a round 900ml lid in front of a takeout 1050ml bowl and watch it rest on top instead of seating. Write the diameter on the carton, not the volume.
One more honest line on Φ150. The ripple 24 oz shares the rim, but the ripple series is listed with paper lids only. If you want a clear lid on a ripple bowl, request samples and fit-test the round Φ150 lid against it before you build a purchase order around the assumption.
The practical rule for every RFQ you send: state volume and rim diameter as a pair, never the ounce figure alone. “750ml, Φ150” reads the same at every supplier on earth. “24 oz” does not, and this range contains two different 24 oz bowls to prove it. Lids are sold separately, so order them by diameter and reconcile them by diameter too.
Coating by Serving Temperature: PE, PLA and Aqueous
Serving temperature picks the coating on disposable paper bowls, not the sustainability story and not the price. Get the order of those decisions wrong and you get a soft bowl.
PE. Rated for hot food up to 95°C, and the default for hot soup, broth, ramen and congee. It is the cheapest barrier on the market and will stay that way. If your bowl holds anything served hot, this is the answer, and the greener options below do not change that.
PLA. Cold and warm food up to 45°C, never hot soup or broth, and there is no microwave claim on any bowl in this range. Guides that put PLA under a hot noodle bowl are selling you a complaint file. PLA is the right call for salads, poke, grain bowls, fruit and cold deli, which is the load the salad bowl range is built for.
Aqueous. The wording is “no plastic film”, and it stays that precise because the coating still contains polymer. Moisture resistance is moderate, so it is not a hot-broth barrier. The chemistry is laid out in what aqueous coating actually is, and MOQ on aqueous runs 30,000 pcs per size against the standard 20,000.
On green claims, take the version you can defend in front of a regulator. BPI certified commercial compostable is available per SKU and covers US commercial composting. If you sell into the EU, ask for current certification status before anything about composting goes on the pack. Home compostable claims apply to food containers only and never to cups, so confirm the scope per SKU.
On PFAS, the accurate wording is that items are screened against a 106-substance PFAS panel by independent labs. That is a test report and not a certification, and any supplier telling you otherwise is overstating what they hold.
If your menu item is served above the cold range, the soup bowl range and PE are where the conversation starts.
Kraft or White Board, and What a Grab-and-Go Case Needs
Board color is a print decision, not a performance one. The bowl underneath is the same paper and the same coating, so all that changes is the artwork it will hold.
Kraft is unbleached, carries the natural look with no optical brighteners, and holds a narrower usable ink range, which suits spot-color print or no print at all. That is why farm-to-table, organic and artisan concepts default to it. White board carries photographic print, fine gradients and accurate Pantone matching, up to 7 colors on a flexo run, and reads clinical and premium in healthcare and fine dining.
Neither board is more sustainable than the other in any way you could put on a pack. Choose on artwork.
Clear lids sell the contents in a chilled case. Paper lids stack tighter and carry print.
In a refrigerated case the lid does more selling than the board does. A clear PET or rPET lid puts the food on display, and anti-fog is available to stop condensation sheeting across the exact thing you are selling. A paper lid stacks tighter for transport, carries print across its full face, and hides the contents completely.
That choice narrows your build list immediately. Clear lids are listed on the round series only, in Φ150 and Φ184. If your program is a chilled deli case, you are specifying round disposable paper bowls with PET or rPET lids, and the ripple and takeout builds are out before you reach sizes.
Two case-fit numbers to take from here. Rim diameter sets how many bowls fit across a shelf, and height sets how many shelf levels you can run. Check both against your own merchandiser clearance rather than assuming a 78mm bowl clears everywhere, because a wrong answer costs a pallet.
One fill note applies to every bowl above. A 32 oz bowl is not a 32 oz portion: fill to the point where the lid still seats without pressure, because an overfilled bowl displaces its own lid under transit vibration.
How to Spec a Paper Bowl Order
A quotable RFQ for disposable paper bowls needs seven lines. The two most often left blank are rim diameter and lid type, which is why quoting rounds go three emails deep before anyone knows what is being priced.
- Build: round, takeout or ripple
- Volume and rim diameter as a pair (750ml, Φ150), never an ounce figure alone
- Coating: PE for hot, PLA for cold and warm to 45°C, aqueous for no plastic film
- Board: kraft or white, and whether you are printing
- Lid type and quantity per diameter, not per bowl size
- Quantity per size against the MOQ
- Service temperature, so a coating mismatch surfaces at quoting rather than at delivery
The ordering realities, unsoftened. MOQ is 20,000 pcs per size on standard items, 30,000 pcs per size on aqueous, and 50,000 pcs per size on custom sizes outside the 13 above. Because MOQ is per size, a round 24 oz and a ripple 24 oz are two separate commitments even though the body is identical, which is the single best argument for choosing your builds before your sizes.
Carry the diameter onto the purchase order line and onto the carton label. A warehouse that receives by ounce size will mis-pick the two 24 oz bowls inside the first week, and nobody catches it until a lid will not seat on a line.
