Salad Bowl Sizes: Real mm Dimensions, Lid Fits and What Each Size Holds

Stock paper salad bowl sizes run in five formats: 500ml (16 oz), 750ml (24 oz), 900ml (30 oz), 1000ml (32 oz) and 1300ml (44 oz). The spec that decides your order is rim diameter in millimeters, not the ounce label. Those five sizes share two rim diameters, so the whole salad bowl range takes two lids.

Three things worth noticing in that table.

First, diameter does not climb with volume. The 750ml and the 1000ml sit on the identical Φ150 rim, and the 1000ml gets its extra volume from 18mm of height (60mm against 78mm). The 900ml sits on a rim 34mm wider than the 1000ml and still holds less. Inside a rim family, volume comes from height, not width.

Second, the same nominal capacity can be built wide or deep, and that is a merchandising decision before it is a capacity one. Our 900ml is the wide build at Φ184 x H49, the 1000ml the deep build at Φ150 x H78. Wide and shallow puts the toppings on display from above. Deep stacks the build vertically and takes less shelf width per unit sold.

Third, rim diameter sets how many bowls fit across a cold-case shelf, and height sets how many shelves you can run. Why 500ml Is Sold as a 16 oz Salad Bowl: The Trade Size Rule

500ml is a 16 oz bowl. Not 16.9 oz, not 17 oz, because trade sizes are naming conventions rather than arithmetic.

The mapping across the range:

  • 500ml = 16 oz
  • 750ml = 24 oz
  • 900ml = 30 oz (uncommon as a US menu size)
  • 1000ml = 32 oz
  • 1300ml = 44 oz

The oz figure names the format buyers order by. The ml figure is the build volume on the spec sheet. Brim capacity and usable serving capacity are different numbers again, which is part of why the trade label sits below what you could physically pour in.

Where this goes wrong: published size guides print the arithmetic instead of the catalog size. Ask a supplier for a volume that only a converter produces and you are describing a product that is not in their range, so you get a substitute. The substitute is the expensive outcome, because you find out at the fit-test stage, or later, when the lids arrive.

The practical rule: order in ml, market in oz. State the ml volume and the rim diameter as a pair in your RFQ (750ml, Φ150), because that pair reads the same at every supplier. Confirm ml, not oz, when you place the order.

One honest note on the 900ml. 30 oz is not a size most US menus use. It exists because the wide Φ184 x H49 build merchandises well from above, not because 30 oz is a portion customers ask for. If you want it, build around the shape rather than the number.

Which Salad Bowl Size Fits Which Menu Item

For a single main-course salad, the default is the 24 oz. You move up to 32 oz when rice, a grain base, or a second protein enters the build.

500ml / 16 oz (Φ150 x H45). Sides, starters, kids portions, fruit and dessert cups. The 45mm depth is what makes it read as a side rather than a small entree: same rim as your main-course bowl, 15mm shallower.

750ml / 24 oz (Φ150 x H60). The main-course workhorse. Foodservice portion benchmarks put 24 to 25 oz as the fast-casual standard for a single entree salad, and 24 oz is one of the two sizes poke shops treat as standard.

900ml / 30 oz (Φ184 x H49). Wide and shallow, built for presentation and cold-case merchandising where the toppings have to be visible from above. It will not hold a tall build.

1000ml / 32 oz (Φ150 x H78). Grain bowls, protein-heavy builds, meal prep. It takes the same shelf footprint as the 24 oz because it shares the Φ150 rim, which matters when your cold case is already laid out.

1300ml / 44 oz (Φ184 x H66). Sharing portions, catering, family style.

The 24 against 32 question comes up most in poke. Both sizes are standard there, so the answer is portion policy rather than packaging. My verdict: 24 oz if your build is protein plus vegetables, 32 oz if rice is the base. Do not let a supplier move you up to the bigger bowl at the same price on the argument that it looks more generous.

One rule bridges portion and leak: the oz label is not a fill line. Industry guidance for dressed and liquid-heavy items puts fill at 75-85% of capacity, because overfilling creates hydraulic pressure on the lid that displaces it under transit vibration. A 24 oz bowl is not a 24 oz portion, and specifying it as one is how a menu ends up leaking in delivery bags.

Most published guides push a two-size lineup, 16 oz plus 32 oz, as covering roughly 80% of orders. Add the 24 oz and you cover the entree center of the menu too. That third size costs nothing in lid inventory, because all three sit on the same Φ150 rim.

The five sizes take two lids. Φ150 covers the 16 oz, 24 oz and 32 oz. Φ184 covers the 30 oz and 44 oz.

It works because a lid seats on the rim, so any bowl sharing a rim diameter shares a lid regardless of height or volume. Industry sourcing guidance is plain: one lid SKU fits several heights and volumes when the bowls share a rim inside one product family. Three of the five sizes cross-cover on one lid, so a lid shortage on the 24 oz can be covered out of 32 oz lid stock the same afternoon, and a three-size lineup is one lid line item on your reorder sheet.

Four lid types are available, each with a real limit:

  • PET / rPET. Best clarity for cold display, anti-fog available, and rPET carries the recycled-content story. PET warps with hot contents, so treat it as a cold-format lid only.
  • PP. Tougher and more heat tolerant than PET, less glossy. The choice when the bowl holds a warm grain base.
  • Stackable paper lid. The lowest-plastic option and the one that stacks cleanly for transport. The customer cannot see the food.
  • Round window paper lid. Paper body with a visibility window. Industry reporting associates transparent and window-lid packaging with a 20-35% grab-and-go sales lift over opaque packs, credited to reduced purchase hesitation. That is an industry finding, not our data.

If the bowls sit in a refrigerated merchandiser, anti-fog stops being cosmetic. Fogging happens when high-moisture food like a dressed salad sits in a cold display case, and an anti-fog lid beads that moisture instead of letting it sheet. A fogged lid hides the exact thing you are selling on.

Blunt verdict on lid type: PET wins on visibility, paper wins on the sustainability story, and no lid wins both. Pick which one your channel is paying for.

One warning before you order on diameter alone. Sharing a rim diameter is necessary but not sufficient. The rim profile has to match too.

Flat Rim vs Rolled Rim: Why Delivery Salads Leak

A flat rim gives the lid a continuous flat sealing surface right around the circumference. A dressed salad in a delivery bag is exactly the load that surface exists for.

The construction difference is simple. A rolled rim seals along a curled edge, a flat rim seals against a flat band. Rolled, straight-wall and double-rolled profiles each need a differently tooled lid channel, and matching the nominal diameter alone does not guarantee a reliable seal. That is why this whole range is built flat rim: one seal geometry across five sizes and two lid diameters.

The trap is cross-supplier mixing, described in sourcing guidance as the single most common source of lid-fit failure. The pattern repeats: a buyer infers rim diameter from the oz label, switches suppliers on unit price, and finds the new lids resting on top of the old bowls instead of seating in them. Marketplace reviewers on plastic salad bowl combos report lids that do not fit the bases shipped in the same case, and describe holding them shut with rubber bands. That is a category-wide sourcing failure rather than one bad product.

When a delivery salad leaks, it is one of three things, and each is diagnosable:

  1. The lid rests instead of snapping. Friction fit, no positive seal.
  2. The bowl was filled past 75-85% of capacity.
  3. The lid is a same-diameter substitute rather than the matched part.

Two actions before a bulk order. Measure the actual rim diameter of any new bowl with a caliper rather than trusting the printed capacity. Then fit-test the new bowls against the lids you already hold, with dressing in them, tilted. Materials and Coatings: What Each One Will Not Do

These are cold and ambient food bowls. If your menu item is hot soup, this is the wrong product and the honest answer is to send you elsewhere.

The three coatings, limit stated first:

  • PE. The cost baseline for cold and ambient service. It is the cheapest barrier on the market and will stay that way.
  • PLA. Cold food up to 45°C. Not for hot soup, and there is no microwave claim on these bowls. Guides telling you PLA salad bowls are microwave-safe are wrong, and at production volumes that claim becomes a complaint file rather than a selling point.
  • Aqueous. The wording is “no plastic film”, and it has to stay that precise: the coating still contains polymer, and the shorter version gets challenged. The chemistry is in what aqueous coating actually is.

On green claims, take the defensible version. BPI certified commercial compostable is available per SKU on PLA and aqueous items, and it covers US commercial composting. On PFAS, the wording is that items are screened against a 106-substance PFAS panel by independent labs, which is a test report, not a certification.

If you sell into the EU, ask for current certification status before anything about composting goes on the pack. No home-compostable claim applies to any item in this range.

Board choice is a print decision, not a performance one. White board carries photographic print and fine gradients. Kraft carries the natural look with a narrower usable ink range. The bowl underneath is the same.

If you are serving hot soup, broth, or anything held above the cold range, use soup bowls instead. That is advice, not a redirect: no coating on this page lifts a salad bowl past its cold-food limit.

How to Spec Your Salad Bowl Order

A quotable RFQ needs six lines. The two that suppliers most often receive blank are rim diameter and lid type.

  • Volume in ml plus the oz trade size, stated as a pair (750ml / 24 oz), never oz alone
  • Rim diameter: Φ150 or Φ184
  • Coating: PE, PLA (cold up to 45°C), or aqueous
  • Board: kraft or white, and whether you are printing
  • Lid type and quantity per diameter, not per bowl size
  • Quantity per size against the MOQ

The ordering realities, stated plainly: MOQ is 20,000 pcs per size. Custom sizes outside these five are 50,000 pcs per size.

MOQ being per size is what makes the lid math matter. A three-size lineup is three bowl commitments no matter how you arrange it, but it is still one lid diameter to warehouse and reorder if all three stay inside the Φ150 family. That is the planning consequence of everything above, and it is the reason to pick sizes by rim before picking them by ounces.
