Blanks vary by supplier. One Chinese factory publishes 120x100x55mm for its 8oz sleeve and a single 125x110x60mm blank covering 10oz through 16oz. Close to ours, not identical, and both are legitimate. Never order sleeves off one supplier’s size chart when your cups came from a different supplier.

Corrugated adds thickness. The fluted board runs 2-2.5mm thick, and that thickness does the insulating work. It also seats the finished band’s inside circumference tighter than the flat numbers suggest, which is where the grip comes from and why a corrugated sleeve tolerates a taper it was not drawn for.

Ask three sellers for sleeve dimensions and you get three answers in three formats, none of which converts cleanly into another. Buyers then line them up in a spreadsheet as if they were comparable.

Take a small sleeve. We describe it as 112x95x50mm. A US distributor lists its 8-10oz sleeve as 2.6in diameter by 2.25in height. A webstore SKU calls the same product a jacket that fits 8-10oz and stops there.

Three descriptions, one product family, no arithmetic that safely bridges them.

The trap is that the conversion depends on a number nobody publishes: the taper of the cup the sleeve was cut for. A diameter measurement is only true at one height on a cone. A flat blank tells you the arc length but not how tightly it will close. An oz range tells you what the seller’s own cups happened to fit.

My advice when you compare quotes: ask every supplier for two things in writing, the flat blank dimensions in mm and the cup model or rim diameter that blank was cut for. Two suppliers who both answer those questions can be compared. Anyone who answers with an oz range only is describing their cups, not yours.

Why One Sleeve Fits Three Cup Sizes (and When It Will Not)

Our 12oz and 16oz blanks sit 5mm apart on every single edge: 125 versus 130 on top, 105 versus 110 at the bottom, 60 versus 65 tall. That narrow gap is the whole reason one sleeve often covers both cups.

The geometry behind it is the rim caliber. Cups built on the Φ90mm rim standard span 10oz to 24oz, and cups in one rim family share a taper family: they grow mostly in height, not in cone angle. Wrap a corrugated band 2-2.5mm thick around any of them and the flute flexes just enough to close the remaining gap.

Tooling explains why universal fit exists as a market pattern rather than a courtesy. Cutting dies are fixed steel. Every new blank size means a new die, and die cost spreads thin only across large volumes, so the industry clusters onto a handful of blanks instead of drawing one per cup. US short-run printers sell a single standard sleeve for 12oz, 16oz and 20oz cups with a separate small sleeve for 8oz, and one Chinese factory cuts one blank for its whole 10-16oz range.

The limits matter, because “universal” is doing heavy lifting in most product listings.

  • 8oz cups need the small blank. They sit on Φ80mm rims, a different rim family. A 12oz sleeve on an 8oz cup spins.
  • 10oz is the industry’s awkward child. It sits at the bottom edge of the Φ90mm family, and the standard answer across the trade is to test a sample rather than assume.
  • 22oz and larger cups fall outside the three blanks. Oversized formats on 100-110mm rims need an extendable design, not a scaled-up standard sleeve.
  • Unusual tapers break the pattern. Squat cups and premium thick-wall builds can share an oz label with a normal cup and not share its cone.

The verdict: run two sleeve SKUs, an 8oz and a mid-size, and stop there. Five SKUs is dead inventory for almost every cafe program.

Matching Sleeve Size to Your Cup Type

Sleeves are an accessory to a specific kind of cup, and sometimes the correct sleeve is no sleeve at all. Map your program before you size anything.

Single wall hot cups, 8-24oz. This is corrugated sleeve territory, full stop. A single wall paper cup has one layer of board between the drink and the hand, so a hot americano needs the band. Cold cups up to 32oz. Here the sleeve stops being insulation and becomes a condensation barrier plus a print surface. Flat paper sleeves are custom-sized across 8-32oz for hot or cold service, and they hold fine detail better than fluted board.

A plain kraft sleeve runs roughly $0.01-0.04 per piece, custom printed at the top of that band. Single wall plus sleeve often lands under a double wall cup on total unit cost, with the bonus that you only sleeve the drinks that need it. For multi-cup takeaway orders, cup carriers solve a different problem and are priced separately.

Best for: single wall hot programs, takeaway-heavy menus, brands that want a printable band without printing every cup. Skip if: you run double wall or ripple wall cups, your service is mostly dine-in ceramic, or your menu is cold and low-condensation.

Getting the Fit Right: Spec to the Cup, Not the Chart

Sleeve complaints come in exactly three shapes. Too loose, and the sleeve travels down the cone and slides off the base, usually while a customer is holding it. Too tight, and staff cannot get it on quickly during a rush, so they stop using it. Too tall, and the sleeve rides up over the lid line and interferes with lidding.

All three trace back to one decision: ordering off a generic size chart when your cup’s taper differs from the taper the chart-writer had on the bench.

The fix is not bespoke cutting, and any supplier promising a die drawn to your exact cup on a normal order is quoting a cost they have not mentioned. Dies are fixed tooling. Ordering Custom Sizes: Minimums and Where to Buy

The sleeve market splits by volume, not by quality, and picking the wrong side of the split is what makes buyers feel overcharged or shut out.

Under a few thousand pieces, US short-run printers are the right answer. Several start at 250 pcs, at a higher unit price, and that trade is worth it for a pop-up, a seasonal design, or a single-location cafe testing artwork.

Production-direct custom printing on standard blanks starts at 20,000 pcs per size. That minimum earns its keep when one design covers a season or a whole chain, because the unit cost sits down in the $0.01-0.04 kraft band instead of short-run pricing. If your annual sleeve burn is 60,000 pieces across two sizes, you are already a production-direct buyer.

A custom blank size is a separate and much bigger decision. It needs a new cutting die, and die cost spreads thin only across large volumes, so small and mid-size runs should stay on the standard 8oz, 12oz and 16oz blanks and put the budget into print instead. Raise a custom blank only when the cup itself is genuinely unusual and the volume is genuinely large.

One more path: unprinted stock kraft sleeves sit with distributors for immediate needs, and they bridge the wait while a printed order is in production or artwork is still in review. Buyers who plan around that gap rarely end up paying short-run prices for a volume they could have consolidated.

Before any of it, put the real thing on your real cup. Request samples with your cup model noted, slide a standard blank onto the cup your baristas actually use, and hand it to someone with a full drink in it. That five-minute test settles more sizing arguments than any chart, including this one.
